• COVID: I spent over an hour a couple of days ago with someone who wanted to talk about COVID. We talked about the news, the symptoms, how they were protecting themselves … all their choice of topics. I shared my thoughts when they asked and we had a wonderful 60+ minutes together. • Weather: Weather is always happening. Yours is often very different from mine here in Miami, so it’s delightful to share our differences. • Culinary Yummies: I am a Foodie and can listen and talk about food all day. Did you go to a great restaurant lately? Do you have the memory of a special meal you want to tell me about? I would so enjoy talking about that! Bring wine into the picture and we are off and running. I was a food writer for awhile, so can talk about everything from McDonald’s fries to a $400 bottle of wine. (Yay for Opus One!)
• Sharing Stories: This is a common phone call, especially during quarantines, but not always because of COVID. Some people live quiet lives alone and just want someone to talk to. I am here to listen as you talk about your favorite books, movies, or hobbies. I have learned about miniature trains, Comic-Cons, how special effects are done in movies, and have even helped other writers edit parts of their books, all on calls. One guy taught me how perfume is made. Another told me about biking across the country. Others have told me about their family trips growing up. All of these are absolutely fascinating to me!
• Disney: I can talk about Disney for 1000 years and never get tired of it. I could probably write a book. (Maybe I should!) Let’s talk about The Mouse!

More Controversial Topics to Explore

• Religion: This is a great topic with which to spend time together. I am not a religious scholar, but have studied some religions for many years. No telling me I am going to Hell or anything like that, but I find religion an awesome point of discussion.
• Mental Health: I am not a therapist and cannot do therapy with you, but I can listen and then help you find resources so you can find peace with those inner thoughts that can make us all feel crazy.
• Politics: This can be a tender topic, for sure, but I find I can maneuver through discussions without anger or belittling someone. As long as we are in a civil discussion, I am game to keep going.
